BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF THE CHALLENGE CAMP

Background:

Greenway Cambodia teaches at multiple schools in the small town of Samraong. Early 2008, Greenway decided to start up several volunteering projects in the Northern Cambodian countryside working with local and international NGOs as well as the provincial government of Oddar Meanchey.

In cooperation with the provincial education department, Greenway has started working in local schools in Samraong, the capital of Oddar Meanchey, and in the surrounding villages. Considering the state of the school buildings, volunteers are not only engaged in basic teaching activities, but also in the basic renovation of the school.

Aim:

To help the environment of learning for the children of the future.

LOCATION OF THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

The location of the school renovation will be in Samrong. Samoang is the capital city of Oddar Manchey, a rural province of Cambodia, used in ancient times as a base by the Khmer Rouge.

WORK TASKS TO BE PERFORMED DURING THE CAMP:

The main task of the camp will be to help with renovations of the schools. At times the camp group will also help teach and make communities aware of the importance of education and learning environment.

STUDY THEME AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES:

The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Cambodia in general and the traditions and specificity of the region. Khmer language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.

DATES OF THE CHALLENGE CAMP AND DRAFT SCHEDULE:

Monday: Arrival day and pick up of the volunteers, orientation day and team building activities.

Draft weekly schedule for the following two weeks (only working days, first week from Tuesday to Friday and second week from Monday to Friday)

06:30   Wake up. Participate in the daily household chores and routines.

07:30   Breakfast and cleaning the cutlery.

08:30   Manual activities and cultural exchange activities.

12:00   Lunch and cleaning the cutlery.

13:00   Manual activities.

18:00   Dinner and cleaning the cutlery

19:00   Group meeting.

19:30   Evening activities with the group and local people.

22:00   Lights off and silence.

Weekend (after the first week): Saturday and Sunday are free days

Last Friday: farewell party

Second weekend: Saturday is departure days.

NOTE: this schedule is a draft and gives you an idea of how life will be during the camp; it may change, depending on the specific needs of the local partner.

NUMBER OF VOLUNTEER:

The maximum volunteers are 15. Due to last minute cancellations this group may be smaller.

LEADERSHIP IN THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

The Challenge camp will be coordinated by a trained PSF Challenge camp leader (coordinator). S/He will be responsible for the group in cooperation with the local partner and host of the Challenge camp. The PSF Coordinator will facilitate the group during the Challenge camp and supports the volunteers.

Volunteers' ideas, proposal and suggestions are most welcome; please bring plenty of them with you!

ACCOMODATION AND FOOD ON THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

Accommodation will be Home Stay and you will get regional style food.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

Please bring the following items with you:

  • Light clothes, not too revealing. These are not appropriate while working in the school with children and for the small villages you will be visiting. Shoulders should be covered all times when in a temple or school. Shorts that are cut at the knee are acceptable only in the villages but not in schools.
  • English teaching materials and some games.
  • Sleeping bag (a thin one, as it is very warm), pillowcase, mat and a medium size backpack.
  • Flash light.
  • Swimsuits: remember in Thailand, women usually swim in a t-shirt and shorts.
  • Mosquito repellant containing DEET and a mosquito net.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Toiletries and towel.
  • Medicines as you think necessary.
  • Spending money for personal items.
  • Closed shoes if you plan to walk or do sport activities in the forest.
  • Raincoats

Optional (but welcome):

  • Pictures of your family, friends and country to share with fellow volunteers and Thai people.
  • Cooking recipes, some cooking material and other things to share your culture through food and drinks.
  • Musical instruments and some traditional games from your country.

INSURANCE FOR THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

Our program does not cover any liability and insurance for volunteers. Therefore, volunteers must have appropriate insurance before joining the program.

PARTICIPATION FEES OF THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

All our 2 week projects cost 400 euros, which includes food/ accommodation/ local transport and 50 euros contribution towards the project. You will have to pay 150 euros and make the booking in advance to reserve your place on the project. The remainder of 250 is due two weeks before the starting date of you camp.

Single Supplements and Own room costs 50 euros additional per week.

MEETING POINT OF THE CHALLENGE CAMP:

Smiley's guest house located: Taphul village, Svaydangkum commune, Siem Reap town. Pick-up will be Mondayof your start date at 2 in the afternoon.

TRAVELLING INSTRUCTIONS TO REACH THE MEETING POINT:

Smiley's guest house is located in Tapul village, Svay Dangkum commune, Siem Reap city.You can go by Tuk Tuk from bus station or taxi from the airport. Samrong is very small city.

Coming directly to our home stay center is easy as taxis know our Greenway Centre well and it is on the road from Siem Reap before they arrive to Samrong.

Pitaya Suwan-Greenway Cambodia is a Cambodian organization working in the fields of meaningful tourism, (alternative) education , environment ,rural development and working with socially disadvantaged groups. Established in 2009 , Greenway consists of a Cambodian-registered organization ( Greenway Cambodia organization )

In 2008 Greenway started up several volunteering projects in Samrong , Otdar Meanchey, Cambodia.
